So with the weather being a bit chilly I thought I’d post something that might warm everyone up. So, what does a wedding photographer do for fun? My version of fun typically involves endurance sport. I love hiking, cycling, and sea kayaking. Mount Washington in New Hampshire’s White Mountain Range is one of my favorite places. I’m not sure quite how to explain it except to say that for me it’s somewhat magical. Ironically I’d never been to the top of Mount Washington when I was growing up (I grew up in Southern, NH). After college I moved to the San Francisco/Bay Area and THAT is when I got the itch to check out Mount Washington. As it turns out my first trip up Mount Washington was on a bicycle. The Tin Mountain Conservation Center runs a bike race up Mount Washington every year and I decided that this would be the best way to get to the summit. I’ve logged quite a few miles on my bike including multiple centuries (a century if you don’t follow cycling is 100 miles in a day, my longest is 127 miles) and let me tell you… that 7.6 miles up to the summit of Mount Washington offers up the most condensed pain per mile of any road I’ve ever been on. For some reason this makes it “fun”. I actually enjoyed it so much I did it two more times (not on the same day though, once a year up Mount Washington is enough). Getting to the point, ever since cycling Mount Washington I’ve always wanted to hike up Mount Washington and I got that opportunity in September of last year along with a group of friends. It was *the* perfect day to hike Mount Washington with mild temps and perfect visibility! If anyone out there is in to hiking drop me a line! It’s kind of hard for me to get out on a weekend in the summer but if you’re up for a weekday hike… Better yet WHO WANTS TO DO AN ENGAGEMENT SESSION HIKE? If that sounds like fun to you, you MUST call me! I am definitely the photographer for you!

Hi everyone,

I’ve finally gotten around to getting my new site to the point where it’s easy to update and maintain. Out with the old and in with the new. The old wedding website was switched out for the blog site yesterday and so far so good. I still need to move around some furniture so if anyone has any questions in the mean time please click on the contact link above.

One of the links that still needs to go up is a pricing link so in the mean time, wedding packages start at $2600 and include wedding day coverage, a DVD of high resolution images, an online gallery of all your wedding photos for 60 days, and a web based slideshow for at least 1 year. I also have packages that contain wedding albums, parent albums, and various other options such as engagement sessions and full coverage from the rehearsal dinner to the wedding day to the wedding brunch or a post wedding photo shoot. For the complete details click the contact link and drop me a line.

Cheers, Joe

One would think, or at least hope that people would be a little more enlightened and that this question wouldn’t even be relevant anymore. It’s something that sparks epic debates on “professional” wedding photography forums. It’s a question that frankly saddens me due to the fact that it even needs to be asked in this day and age and that question is the title of this post:

Do you shoot same sex weddings?

The answer is YES. Enthusiastically YES!!! Love is Love, marriage is a celebration of that and marks a significant milestone in life. Regardles of whether or not that love is between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, or a man and a man it’s all the same, it’s love. I find it depressing that same sex couples would even have to ask the question before even asking if their wedding date is available. I figured that the best thing I could do to help as an individual and as a business owner was to answer the question before it got asked. I do hope that one day this form of discrimination no longer exists. It will eventually happen, I’m sure of that. Unfortunately it can not happen soon enough.

I realize I may actually alienate some potential clients and lose them as a result of this post. I’m fine with that. I feel it is more important to support a community that has been persecuted and treated unfairly. The free expression of love, regardless of sexual orientation (and orientation is the correct word here, it is not merely a preference) is far more important to me than any amount of money.

Cheers, Joe

Really… I can’t stand the things! Static electricity makes them stick to everything and when you’re trying to extract whatever goodie it is from the box you just received these annoying little things are hell bent on not letting you get to your goods without creating an explosion of multi-colored styrofoam! If you do end up spilling them all of the place, cleaning them up is a challenge because it’s nearly impossible to let go of a packing peanut because they’re pre-programmed to stick to people who don’t like them. They’ll go anywhere but where you want them to go. Sometimes I think they’re actually all talking to one another and mocking me. So of course what do I use to pack your DVDs and wedding albums? Packing peanuts! Every time I prepare a box for shipment and carefully rid myself of these pesky little balls of styrofoam I feel incredibly guilty so my apologies in advance!

This of course begs the question, why would I inflict these insidious little buggers on you, my client? Surely it can’t be considered a humane business practice? “Hey, here’s your wedding photographs… I know you’re really looking forward to seeing them so for my own personal amusement I decided to put a miniature obstacle course inside your package. Don’t rush or you’ll make a mess”. LOL No no no… while it sounds like something Dr. Evil might do, that’s not my motivation. Here’s the reason: I’m always receiving packages with… packing peanuts. This week I ordered a piece of diagnostic equipment and another hard drive tray and of course they came packed to the hilt (in an oversized box… “they” must KNOW I dislike packing peanuts) with those dreaded white and pink static laden balls of mockery. I can’t just throw them out as the tree hugging component of my personality would have me in for a major guilt trip. Instead of throwing them out I save them and reuse them when the need arises.

So, my apologies to you for packing your stuff with packing peanuts. I know paper or bubble wrap would be a more sophisticated way to do things but then I’d have to throw these packing peanuts out and it just doesn’t seem right. If it’s practical, save them for when you need to ship something or if your office has a shipping department, they no doubt have a packing peanut bin. Add yours to their collection!
Cheers, Joe
